How to Print a PDF at the Correct Size

A PDF may look correct on screen but print too small, become cropped, or span extra pages. These problems often come from print scaling, paper-size mismatches, or printer margins rather than from the PDF content itself.

Check paper size and orientation

Confirm the paper size selected in the print dialog matches the document and the paper loaded in the printer. Common choices include A4 and Letter, which have different dimensions.

Check portrait versus landscape orientation. Automatic orientation usually works, but a page with unusual dimensions may need a manual setting. Review the preview before printing the whole document.

Understand actual size and fit to page

Actual Size or 100% scaling prints the page at its defined dimensions, subject to the printer's printable area. Content near the edges may still be clipped if the printer cannot print to the edge.

Fit or Shrink to Printable Area scales the page to fit the available printable region. This can make the content smaller than its original dimensions. Use the option that matches your goal instead of assuming one setting is always correct.

Check margins and page ranges

Look at the print preview for cut-off text, blank pages, unexpected page breaks, and incorrect orientation. If only selected pages are required, enter the page range carefully and verify the count.

Borderless printing is not available on every printer or paper type. If a document must retain exact physical dimensions, print a test page and measure a known element before producing multiple copies.

Troubleshoot a PDF that prints incorrectly

If the preview is correct but the paper output is not, check printer driver settings, paper loaded in the tray, scaling preferences, and any application-specific options.

If the PDF itself has unusual page dimensions, inspect the document before editing it. Cropping changes the visible page area; it is not the same as changing print scaling. Keep an untouched copy while testing adjustments.
