Cropping a PDF is not the same as redacting it
A page can look as if information has disappeared while the PDF still contains the underlying text or image. Cropping changes what is shown inside the page boundary; redaction is meant to remove selected content. Treat those operations differently when privacy matters.
What a crop changes—and what it does not
A crop adjusts the visible page area. In this site’s Crop PDF tool, the saved document keeps its page content and applies a crop box to the selected pages. Content outside the visible boundary may still be present in the file and can potentially be revealed by another viewer or by changing the page boundary.
Cropping is useful for trimming margins or improving presentation. It should not be used to hide an account number, address, signature, or other information from a recipient.
Why overlays and page deletion are not substitutes
Drawing a black rectangle over text may only cover it visually; selectable text or underlying objects can remain. Deleting a page removes that page from the new copy, but it does not remove the same information if it appears on another page, in an attachment, or in document properties.
Flattening or printing to another file can change the document, but it is not a reliable substitute for a purpose-built redaction workflow unless the resulting content is checked and the sensitive data is actually removed.
Use permanent redaction when the content must be removed
A proper redaction tool is designed to remove selected text or image content from the saved document rather than merely cover it. This site does not currently offer a redaction tool. If removal is required, use a trusted PDF editor with a permanent redaction function and follow its instructions for applying and saving the redactions.
- Keep an untouched original in a controlled location before editing.
- Apply the redaction in the dedicated tool and save a separate copy.
- Reopen the copy and check visible pages, text search/selection, annotations, and document properties.
- Do not share the file if sensitive content can still be revealed.
Check both content and processing privacy
Content removal and file handling are separate questions. Before using any service for sensitive material, check whether the PDF is processed in the browser or sent to a server, how temporary files are handled, and whether the service is suitable for your document.
Crop PDF on this site runs in the browser, but its local processing does not make cropping a secure redaction method. Choose a workflow based on the operation the document needs, not only where the button runs.
