How to Troubleshoot a PDF That Will Not Open

A PDF that will not open may be incomplete, damaged, incorrectly downloaded, or incompatible with the viewer. Start with checks that preserve the original instead of repeatedly overwriting or modifying the only copy.

Check the file and download

Confirm that the download finished and that the file has a plausible size. If you received the PDF by email or through a website, download it again from the trusted original source when possible.

A file extension alone does not prove that a file is a valid PDF. If the file was renamed manually, check with the sender before attempting further repair.

  • Keep the original file unchanged.
  • Try a fresh download from the source.
  • Check whether another PDF viewer can open it.
  • Ask the sender to export or send a fresh copy if needed.

Separate viewer problems from file problems

Update or switch to a trusted PDF viewer and try opening another known-good PDF. If other files also fail, the viewer or device may be the issue. If only one file fails across viewers, the file itself may be incomplete or malformed.

If the PDF opens but pages appear blank, missing, or incorrectly rendered, compare it in another viewer and check whether the source document can be exported again.

Be careful with online repair services

An online repair service may require uploading the document to a server. Do not upload confidential, financial, identity, or work documents unless the service’s handling and retention terms are acceptable to you.

No repair method can guarantee recovery of every damaged file. After a repaired copy opens, inspect all pages, links, forms, attachments, and important values before relying on it.
