About Chat with PDF

Use Chat with PDF for follow-up questions after you need to understand a text-based document rather than only read a one-time summary.

What is Chat with PDF?

Chat with PDF lets you ask several follow-up questions about extracted document text in one browser session. It is useful for exploration after a one-time summary is not enough.

When this tool helps

  • Ask for clarification about a section or term.
  • Explore a report through several questions in one session.
  • Find relevant context without manually scanning every page first.

What happens to your file?

Text is extracted in the browser. The relevant extracted text and your question are sent to the configured AI provider; the original PDF remains outside the AI request.

Features in this tool

  • Ask multiple questions in the same tab.
  • Use relevant page excerpts and bounded context for each request.
  • Send extracted text and questions to the configured AI provider, not the original PDF file.

Common problems and solutions

  • The answer lacks context: Ask a narrower question and include the section or term you want explained; compare the response with the source pages.
  • The PDF is scanned: Run OCR PDF first, then use the recognized text for the conversation.
  • AI is unavailable: The chat feature depends on server-side provider configuration. Regular tools remain available when chat cannot run.

Tips and limitations

  • The tool reads at most the first 30 pages of a PDF up to 20 MB. Each question uses up to 42,000 characters of relevant page excerpts, and the question can contain up to 3,000 characters.
  • Previous exchanges remain visible in the tab, but each request uses the current question and PDF excerpts rather than the earlier chat turns.
  • Scanned PDFs need OCR PDF first. AI-generated answers can be wrong or incomplete, especially when the source is ambiguous.

Frequently asked about Chat with PDF

Does chat understand scanned pages?

Not directly. Run OCR first so selectable text is available.

Can I trust every answer?

No. Verify important information, quotations, and numbers in the original document.
